Alesya and Maria. They didn’t “announce” the evening so much as invite everyone into it, setting a cosy, human tone that carried through the night. Before long, the first notes of Christmas melodies rose from the Every Nation Church Choir. Their harmonies weren’t flashy, but sincere — the kind of singing that brings back childhood memories of holidays spent with family. People edged closer without realising it, drawn in by the comfort of familiar tunes. They were not the usual Christmas choir. They were a humble group, playing their own instruments, performing so ever beautifully.

Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for: the official lighting of the Christmas tree. General Manager Paul kept his speech short and genuine, focusing on gratitude and togetherness. When he joined the crowd in the countdown, the lobby buzzed with anticipation —

children jumping, adults laughing, everyone shouting the final “one!” and the General Manager hit the button then the tree flickered to life, bathing the room in warm gold.

But the showstopper wasn’t the tree.

It was the life-sized gingerbread fireplace — a handcrafted masterpiece that looked like it had been plucked from a storybook. Created by Executive Chef Fadzil Arshad and his pastry team led by Chef Rozaini, the installation blended artistry with nostalgia. Up close, you could smell the subtle spice of ginger and caramelised sugar. Guests circled it like it was a museum exhibit, half-admiring, half-wondering if they were allowed to take a bite.

ust when the excitement seemed to peak, a familiar sound cut through the chatter: the jingle of bells. Santa Claus made his entrance with the confidence of someone who knows he’s the star of the season, accompanied by the ever-cheerful “Santa Rina.” Their arrival sent a ripple of joy through the room — little ones ran forward wide-eyed, while adults pretended not to be just as delighted.

The duo wandered through the lobby greeting guests, posing for photos, handing out Christmas goodies, and sprinkling that playful holiday spirit that makes even grown-ups forget about emails and deadlines for a moment.

As the night settled, no one seemed in a hurry to leave. People lingered under the glow of the tree, sipped their drinks more slowly, and snapped a few extra photos of the gingerbread fireplace — as if storing pieces of the evening to take home with them.

In the end, the event wasn’t memorable because of its grandeur, but because of its warmth. It felt human. It felt festive. And for one night, Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur became a place where strangers shared a little holiday magic together.
